Camera? Check. Travel tripod? Check. Photographers’ apps? Here are half a dozen apps you’ll want to get on your smartphone before you hit the road, whether you’re en route to shoot a destination wedding or a commercial job, or on the hunt for good travel shots and stock.

The Photographer's Ephemeris
Need to know when the golden hour will strike in your far-flung destination? This app will help you plan for outdoor shoots wherever you may land, with sun and moon calculators that can tell you the angle of the light at any given time, sunrise and sunset times, and even the exact time when the sun or moon will appear from behind mountains and hills. Its map-based interface lets you pinpoint your location, and finding rise/set times and azimuths doesn’t require a network connection.

Second Shootr
So you’ve checked in at the hotel in Madrid and you’re ready to meet up with the best man to scout out a location for group photos at . . . what was the name of that plaza again, and which room is the best man staying in? You can keep all of the deets for your shoot in your pocket with this app. Store information on clients, schedules, shot lists, and gear lists, and check locations on a built-in map.

Easy Release
Traveling to shoot stock or for an assignment? With this app you can generate standard, customizable model and property releases in 13 languages, and have your subjects sign them with a finger right on your phone. The app can embed a shot of your subject in your copy of each release for your records, and then e-mail you and your clients PDF and JPEG copies.
